Obituary

Jerrle Miller Gericke, age 59 a longtime resident of west suburban Naperville, died of complications from metastatic breast cancer at 7 a.m. Monday, August 31. For 33 years, Jerrle worked as a senior project manager at Alcatel- Lucent, the global telecommunications corporation formerly known as AT& T Bell Laboratories. Jerrle loved reading, sports, film noir, enduring friendships, the Chicago Cubs, aerobic exercise, baking, cooking, and beagles great and small. As a fourteen-year survivor of breast cancer, she contributed time, energy, and money to Susan B. Komen and other cancer charities. Through the American Cancer Society, she counseled women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, to show them what she’d learned by her own successful survival of her lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. She remained cancer free until October, 2014, when her former cancer resurfaced metastatically. Jerrle Joanne Miller was born Sept. 4, 1955, on the North Side of Chicago. She was a varsity swimmer at Von Steuben High School in Chicago, and a sportswriter and editor at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, where she double majored in journalism and TV-radio- film. After graduation in 1977 she worked as a project manager for a Chicago accounting firm, then as a technical writer for military publications at the Rock Island Arsenal. In 1982, she joined the technical writing staff at AT& T Bell Labs in Naperville, where she worked until her passing. Jerrle’s love of travel brought her and her husband Shane to England, Scotland, Ireland, Israel, Germany, Italy, France, Canada, the Caribbean Islands, and much of the United States. She completed the Chicago Triathlon-one-mile swim in Lake Michigan, 25-mile bike ride on Lake Shore Drive, and 10k run along the lake-and various mini-marathons. She is survived by her husband, Shane William Gericke, a bestselling thriller novelist and former newspaper editor at the Chicago Sun-Times; her parents, Marshall and the late Gwendolyn Miller;
